Algae at our service
Algica is an amorphous silica material with a highly ordered mesoporous structure and could therefore be used in multiple applications.
Increased capacity in Lithium-ion battery Anodes
Commercial lithium-ion batteries use graphite anodes. However, the specific capacity of graphite is low (about 400 mAh/g). Silica on the other hand has a specific capacity almost five times as high as graphite (about 1950 mAH/g). Swedish Algae factory is now a part of the EU-funded project SUSTBATT which aims to use the highly ordered mesoporous silica of diatom shells to increase capacity in lithium-ion batteries.
